Productivity Consulting: What Is It Really?

productivity-consultingDo you often feel frustrated because you don't get everything done you want or need to? Do you often feel overwhelmed with information, ideas, and what we often call "stuff?" Do you often wonder whether you're doing what you were put on this earth to do? (Notice each of those questions contains the word "often," -- because I'm confident that everyone feels that way sometimes -- the question is "How often?") If you answered "Yes," to any of these questions, then I highly recommend you listen to this podcast on productivity consulting.  Listen as I share what productivity consulting is about, what a productivity consultant does and what you can expect to achieve if you decide to work with one. Hello, I'm Barbara Hemphill. My passion is helping you accomplish your work and enjoy your life, and I'm so glad you've joined me again today!

Do you often feel frustrated because you don't get everything done you want or need to? Do you often feel overwhelmed with information, ideas, and what we often call "stuff?" Do you often wonder whether you're doing what you were put on this earth to do? (Notice each of those questions contains the word "often," -- because I'm confident that everyone feels that way sometimes -- the question is "How often?") If you answered "Yes," to any of these questions, I highly recommend you consider hiring a productivity or organizing consultant.

If you do an Internet search on the terms "productivity consultant" or "organizing consultant," you will get thousands of results, but today I want to share my definition. Actually you've already heard it in this podcast, but it's unlikely you made the connection, so I'd like to explain. My definition of a productivity consultant is someone who helps you "accomplish your work and enjoy your life!"

The ways they provide that service are as varied as the people who provide it, so I want to outline the process that I and the Certified Productive Environment Specialists who take my training use. We call our process the Productive Environment Process. I define a "Productive Environment" as an "intentional setting in which you can accomplish your work and enjoy your life. The process involves five simple (notice I didn't say "easy!") steps:

1. State your vision.
2. Identify your obstacles
3. Commit your resources
4. Design your SYSTEM (Saving You Space Time Energy Money)
5. Maintain your success

Notice, first, that each of those steps contains one common word: "YOUR" -- that's the key element of my services as productivity consultant -- the services are about YOU. I believe my role as productivity consultant is a "facilitator"-- to ask questions that will identify what solutions you need and then help you find the solutions through your existing resources, resources I can provide, or resources I can help you find. That's why that my philosophy for the past 30+ years as been "Together We Are Better!"

Now here's what I believe is the most important fact in getting results with any productivity consulting. The process begins in the brain! After all, your brain is an environment. It's no accident that "The Power of Positive Thinking" and other books with similar messages have been bestsellers for decades!

Recently I attended a training session for Send Out Cards distributors in which a major portion of the session was dedicated to training our minds. It's been my own experience that to accomplish my work and enjoy my life, I often need a coach to help me see myself, and to help me get back on track or move forward.

Next week we will look in detail at each of those five steps in the Productive Environment Process. In the meantime, here's a question for you! Have you ever hired an organizing or productivity consultant? Why or why not? If you did, what was your experience? What was helpful? What wasn't?

If you like this podcast and think a friend or colleague can benefit from it please share it with them using the Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn buttons on the podcast page on my website." Until next week, I'm Barbara Hemphill. Thanks for listening!
