Last week I introduced the 7 keys to accomplishing your work and enjoying your life based on one of my favorite books on weight control called Weight Loss the Jabez Way: 7 Keys to Adding Years to Your Life by Scott Conrad, MD. He defines the seven keys as:
  1. Air
  2. Water
  3. Sleep
  4. Food
  5. Exercise
  6. Relationships
  7. Purpose

I hope you have been more conscious about breathing, drinking, and sleeping more!

Today I want to talk about the next two keys: food and exercise.

4) Food is certainly an important topic this time of year. I recently read an article that said the average person gains six pounds between Thanksgiving and New Years! Food has been a big topic of conversation in my life recently, as I have several friends and colleagues who are fighting cancer, and have dramatically changed the way they eat as a result. I've struggled with eating my entire life, and am determined to change my eating habits because I want to, not because I've been forced to. Not only do I love virtually all foods -- especially ones filled with sugar, fat and salt -- but more detrimental to me is that I use food to cope with all kinds of emotion from comfort to celebration, but thankfully, in the past few years, I've found several techniques that have enabled me to buy clothes two sizes smaller.

One of the most dramatic changes came as a result of realizing that often when I think I'm hungry, I'm really tired. (There is scientific evidence to support that discovery!) So by going to sleep instead of eating, I make progress in two areas.

Another big change came as a result of signing up for the Isagenix program. The positives with that decision are numerous: I actually enjoy the shakes that are meal substitutes. They save me time and as a result I've stopped skipping meals. I save money spent on food I ended up throwing away instead of eating. I've even discovered I can fast on the days I travel - thus saving money and eliminating unhealthy food!

5) The 5th key is "exercise." When asked what was the key to his unbelievable business success, Richard Branson replied, "Working out." Many years ago at a seminar I attended Stephen Covey made the statement, "Name one thing that if you did it consistently would improve the quality of your life." It took only seconds for me to answer, "Exercise." After numerous false starts, I discovered a program developed by former professional football player Dave Hubbard called Fit 10. He took away all my excuses for not exercising -- time, money, inconvenience, cost, and embarrassment! I've been a Fit 10 student for 15 years -- notice I said "student" because I keep discovering more ways I can get value from my 10 mins/day exercise. You can look under Resources on www.BarbaraHemphill.com to learn more about it.

I've just ordered FitDesk for my office -- an exercise bike with a laptop holder -- stay tuned for future podcasts to see how that works for me!

The fact that many schools have eliminated daily PE is incredibly destructive to the future of our nation. One of my strong motivations for being fit is not only wanting to be able to spend quality time with my grandchildren, but also encouraging them to exercise at the same time.

So here's my question for you this week! Are there any new habits you want to consider relating to food or exercise?
