Barbara started her career in the organizing industry in 1978 with a $7 ad in a New York newspaper. Over the decades, she has developed world-class expertise in helping individuals and organizations to tame the chaos and clutter that keep them from being effective, calm, and ultimately free. Her first best-selling book, Taming the Paper Tiger, helped her launch and grow the organizing industry.
Barbara is the founder of Productive Environment Institute, with offices in Raleigh and Carolina Beach, NC, and a team of Certified Productive Environment Specialists who work virtually worldwide. Their passion is helping people accomplish their work and enjoy their lives, and helping organizations to increase profit, productivity, and peace of mind.
Barbara has been featured on national media platforms including Good Morning America, The Today Show and CNN Nightly News. She has also been showcased in publications including USA Today, New York Times, Fast Company, Reader’s Digest, Real Simple and Guideposts. She was named a member of “Power 20” by Formidable Woman Magazine, and of “100 Women to Know in America.”
Barbara’s book, Less Clutter More Life, reveals that physical and digital clutter is a symptom of emotional and spiritual clutter. She is passionate about empowering others to publish books, and honored to collaborate with Certified Productive Environment Specialist Judith Guertin to write Taming the Digital Tiger: Gmail Edition. Her most recent project is a YouTube series “Walking with Barbara,” based on her soon-to-be released book Walking with Barbara: 30 Emails from God.

Barbara has been married for 35 years and has three adopted children from India, two stepchildren, and four grandchildren. In March 2020 she began collaborating with a family in India to build the Shepherd’s House Ministry to demonstrate the power of Biblical principles to foster entrepreneurship to share the love of Jesus.
Barbara’s life goal is to live every day joyfully while giving hope to others! Her license plate reads HOPEFOOL. When people ask “Why?” she replies, “I am a fool for the Kingdom of God and H.O.P.E stands for Help Others Pursue Entrepreneurship, which has been my passion for 40+ years!
